What Low Fat Diet Can Do To Your Heart
Posted in Diet Recipe Tips on Mar 09,2010

Have you heard about the latest study about a low fat diet that claims to lower HDL cholesterol?

It is first important to understand what HDL cholesterol is all about. Experts say that primarily consists of particles otherwise known as APO A1 which has “anti-atherogenic”

characteristics that serves to protect and alter heart disease by practically scouring the walls of the blood vessels to clean unwanted cholesterol.

Reuters Health reported about a study conducted at the Buffalo State University of New York on a group of adult inactive but healthy individuals.

They divided the group into 2 for a three week diet program.

The first group was given a diet with low fat content containing less than twenty percent of calories while they gave the second group leveled up fat diet consisting of more than fifty percent calories from fat.

It was noted that HDL or good cholesterol level shot up by more than fourteen percent in comparison to those who were given a low fat diet. The second group registered an escalation to 63 mg/dl in their HDL cholesterol.

Recent studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association disclosed that low carbohydrate with high fat diet is not the basis of an increased danger of heart disease. So there is no need to be alarmed if you are in this situation.

What then is a low carbohydrates diet? It is best defined as “slow carb”. What we need are carbohydrates which are rich in fiber that are easily digested to prevent the sudden rise in insulin. These foods are the likes of green leafy vegetables, beans and whole grains, Consumption of carbohydrates filled with sugar should be controlled. Example of these is pasta which is a favorite dish during parties and special celebrations.

An extensive study that spanned more than twenty years involving 82,000 females revealed that there was twice the risk of heart disease among those who consumed carbohydrates from refined sugar and processed foods. This shows clearly one example of the ill effects of sugar and processed food. Throughout the study, there was no disclosure in the quantity of trans fat in the food labels of the products that were used by the subjects.

Most people do not receive the essential fats and oils the body needs. There are different kinds of fats and oils. Some are good and some are bad and nowadays, it is hard to obtain what is essential for good health. Some foods which are excellent sources are omega3 oil and coconut oil. These have great beneficial effects for the heart, the brain and the immune system.

Trans fat is unhelpful and do not promote good health. Its consumption increases the risk of coronary heart ailment. A warning signal on the label of certain foods products is when you see “partially hydrogenated oil” as one of its ingredients. Avoid eating these products.

According to a current study being done by the Nurses’ Health Study, a ninety three per cent rise in coronary ailments can result from a mere two per cent trans fat use. Common sense therefore dictates that if you want to have your heart in the best condition, eat fibrous carbohydrates and follow a healthy fat diet.
